History of the Doctor Who Scarves

When Tom Baker was cast as the Doctor, costume designer James Acheson picked up a load of wool and asked a knitter called Begonia Pope to knit a scarf for Tom. She inadvertently used all the wool Acheson had given her, resulting in a scarf that was some twenty feet long. This unusual scarf was well received by the cast and crew and after being shortened slightly, it was worn by Baker beginning on "Robot." The pattern for this scarf is shown here. The scarf in its original form was only seen in "Robot" and "The Sontaran Experiment," which was taped right after Robot. The scarf underwent a series of alterations over the years and other scarves were also worn by Tom in later seasons.

Here is a chronological list of notable "scarf events," including changes to the original scarf and the introductions of each new scarf. This list shows the stories in the order in which they were filmed, as the stories were not always broadcast in the same order. (which is why on some stories Tom seemed to have reverted back to a previous costume/scarf!)
