The Season 16 Scarf

This scarf was introduced in the Ribos Operation and is actually the original scarf (last seen in the Deadly Assassin) attached to the duplicate scarf, originally seen in the Android Invasion and last seen in the Sunmakers. These two scarves were not exactly "replicas," as the duplicate was knitted on smaller needles, had slightly different color proportions and had some slightly different colors - The purple was lighter, the yellow was brighter, the red was darker and the beige had less color. See a zoomable photo of the original scarf to see these colors differences.

This was the longest scarf to date, even exceeding the length of the season 15 scarf. This one was worn by Tom throughout season 16 and 17 and was last seen in Shada, the untransmitted story. Just prior to Shada it had undergone further transformation, including new tassels, sewn-on patches and one rearranged section. This is how the scarf exists today, as seen in these photos from my recent visits.

How to create the Season 16 scarf

Since this scarf is essentially the original times two, I have used the same yarn recommendations. If you want a truly authentic season 16 you can even find the subtle variations of the duplicate half that I mentioned above. If you want to go one step further for an authentic Shada version, you could also get a lighter gray and burgundy for each end, finished off with short tassels of these two colors mixed with red. And don't forget the patches!

These colors are not all the same brand or fiber, but they work fine together, at least in my experience. (you might have to adjust your knitting tension slightly for the different yarns though.)

Yellow
  • Best Choice: Universal Deluxe Worsted (12182 "Gold Spice") -- 1 skein
  • Choice 2: Cascade 220 Wool (2415) -- 1 skein (better in conjunction with the Nashua beige)
Green
  • Best Choice: Universal Deluxe Worsted (12181 "Bronze Brown") -- 4 skeins
  • Choice 2: Jojoland Baritone (525) -- 7 skeins (If you want a more brownish green. Works better in conjunction with the Jamieson's Brown.)

If you decide to use different yarn, keep in mind that it should preferably be wool or a wool blend and sport-worsted weight.

Specifications:

  • Needles: This scarf should be knitted with US#4 to US#6 needles.
  • Stitch: Garter stitch. Slip the last stitch as if to knit.
  • Width: Varies! 11 inches wide for original half and 9 inches on the duplicate half. The number of stitches to achieve this width can vary and depends on the thickness of the yarn and the size of the needles.
  • Length: This was the longest scarf Tom wore besides the season 18, and made a knee-sized loop while touching the ground on either side.
  • Tassels: The tassels should consist of all seven colors. They should be placed very close together and should be about 4 inches long when finished.
