The Season 18 Scarf

In season 18 a brand new costume was devised for Tom, designed by June Hudson. This costume followed a burgundy color scheme and included the usual hat, scarf, and long coat. The scarf consisted of mostly burgundy but also included purple and a brick orange. It was about the same length and width as the season 16 scarf, but was knitted with a luxurious yarn (probably Chenille) and had a completely different pattern. Most notable was the fact that each color had a double border, overlapping the surrounding colors.

How to create the Season 18 scarf

As usual, the first step is finding the right yarn. The colors are more important than the fiber and since this scarf only consists of three colors, it is a relatively easy task to find all three.

Lion brand makes a really nice suede yarn that works perfectly for this scarf! It looks truly authentic and feels very soft and luxurious. The burgundy is not exactly right, but it still works well. This yarn is widely available and usually can be found at Michaels or similar craft stores. The colors to use are:

  • Burgundy: "Garnet" (4 skeins)
  • Purple: "Eggplant" (4 skeins)
  • Orange: "Spice" (4 skeins, but get one extra if you're doing the edge)

I should tell you that Suede is not quite as easy as wool to knit with. Chenille is extremely difficult to knit with and the finished product tends to not look very good. If you want an easier knitting experience, go with a wool or wool blend instead.

* These patterns all begin at the bottom left and end at the bottom right, joining at the top. (or vice-versa) A text-based version of this pattern is here.

Specifications:

  • Tassels: The tassels should consist of the orange and burgundy colors only. (no purple) They should be placed very close together and should be about 4 inches long.
  • Needles: This scarf should be knitted with US 5-7 needles, depending on the yarn you choose.
  • Stitch: Garter stitch. Slip the last stitch as if to knit.
  • Width: The scarf should be 10-12 inches wide. (40-50 stitches, depending on the yarn thickness and needle size)
  • Length: This scarf stretched considerably during season 18 and in Logopolis in was probably about 20 feet long! When unstretched it should touch the ground on both sides and make a waist-length loop. When stretched it should make an almost ground-length loop.
  • Edge: When you hit the 4 small "overlapping" stripes, instead of cutting the yarn after each small stripe, you should just put the yarn down and begin knitting with the next color, then just keep switching them until that two-color section is finished. Like this:

If you'll notice on Tom's scarf there is a thin orange border on one side. I believe this was a crocheted border designed to hide the color ends. (This can be done very easily after the scarf is finished, but I don't know how to do it.)
